A garden revival

- Maureen Benjamin of Kensington, Cape Town writes

I’ve wanted to plant a garden and veggie patch in our overgrown yard for a long time, but just never got around to it. I inherited my love for gardening from my mom; she could sit for hours outside in her wheelchair enjoying the flowers and listening to the birds. Eventually my hubby Harris and I made a plan. We pulled out weeds, used old bricks and stones for a pathway and got pallets for new plants – mostly cuttings from members of our community.

Harris made a pergola for the grapevine and got planter boxes from our neighbours; he also pruned the roses that my late mom planted years ago. We worked as a team in the garden every day, early in the morning and late in the evening. I’m so grateful for my husband’s help and planning skills; without him it wouldn’t have been such a huge success.
