Izenjana Book Launch
The Buffalo City Municipality , Central Library in East London hosted the launch of Izenjana which is a volume of poetry. Izenjana is a book that contains various poems as written by Mr Lungisile Mselana. The launch was held to mark the International Day of Literacy by the Central Library. Kelly Vos selected the book to celebrate new writing and promote literacy in the vernacular. All the poems in the volume are written in isiXhosa which is one of the official languages in the country. As a librarian she was delighted with this writing as there is a need for more writers in the vernacular. The Calabash House is the publisher and was represented by owner, Mr Wame Mzontsundu Ngcakani. He introduced Mr Mselana as one of rare people he has encountered who have a unique gift of writing poetry and relate it to everyday living. Mr Mselana spoke to the audience about the origin of his poems which are inspired by every day life happenings. Narrating how he was inspired to write one of the poems titled “Inkwenkwezi” he said it was what he saw one evening when he went outside of his rural home to relieve himself in the toilet which is located outside. In the distance between the house and toilet he noticed the beauty of the star and one star that was bigger and brighter and dashed across the sky caught his attention. He went back to the house, forgetting why he went out, and started penning the poem down. These poems are an inspiration and would serve much if they could be shared with the upcoming and next generation of Xhosa speaking learners.
