-Youth Quake: Cleaning Campaign

-

The Western Cape branch, of the national non- profit organization called Youth Quake, has given much the needed relief to the residents of Philippi on the East of the Mother City. Entitled the “Quake Saturday”, this bi- annual campaign is focused on doing acts of kindness to a designated community out of a free will.

On Saturday, the 18th of August the residents of Philippi were amazed to see the white t- shirts going deep into the unofficial dumping sites and getting rid of anything that might be a health hazard to the community.

The provincial Youth Quake identified a kids park that was surrounded by unsightly garbage which might subsequently be linked to eruption of air pollution diseases. Youth Quake called upon the local political leaders to start teaching the youth about the importance of littering in the provided litter bins and dumping sites.

More than thirty ‘ Quakers’ as they refer to themselves, were vigorously chanting struggle songs and celebrating the victory against environmental pollution, on their return from a job well done. Part of the equipment was made available by the Councillor Siphiwe Nqamnduku who is the political leader of the community. In his interview with iLocal he expressed his concerns on the escalating ignorance of the community in taking hygiene as a priority.

Councillor Nqamnduku claims that the street committees and other leaders had been constantly encouraging people to dump in wastebaskets but it seems the ‘ eat- and- throw’ culture has caught up with the community.

“Environmental health is a corporate responsibility of the community and the Youth Quake hopes to create an environment where each will take it upon them to keep the environment clean and healthy” said one of the Youth Quakers. The community of Philippi has expressed their heart- felt gratitude for the initiative and have called upon other similar organizations to continue spreading the word especially to informal settlements where people are not firmly knowledgeable about the repercussions of living in a polluted environment.
