While The Mid­lands Kitchen is de­signed to serve up hearty, quick fare for those pass­ing by on their way to other des­ti­na­tions, what you’ll find on your plate here is about as far away from the tra­di­tional idea of fast food as pos­si­ble.That’s be­cause top chefs have de­signed the menus. Mark Wood of Granny Mouse fame over­sees the run­ning of all 15 kitchens, the staff of which were trained specif­i­cally to be spe­cial­ists in their re­spec­tive cui­sine. The in­gre­di­ents used are also sourced from lo­cal farms – the Mid­lands pro­vides a bounty of those, in­clud­ing grass-fed cat­tle, or­gan­i­cally raised poul­try, milk from a lo­cal dairy and cheese from a neigh­bour­hood cheesery – or grown on site.This en­sure all meals are not only sus­tain­able and fresh, but also sup­port­ive of the lo­cal mi­cro-econ­omy. In this re­spect, the ven­ture has also cre­ated over 100 jobs for lo­cal res­i­dents.Talk about soul food!

Fi­nally, for those who – sadly – don’t have time to sit down to en­joy their meal in this buzzing at­mos­phere with pretty views of the sur­round­ing hills, there is also a grab-and-go sec­tion which stays open un­til 20h00 (the restau­rants close at 16h00). Their home­made pies are leg­endary!

You’re back in the car, and ev­ery mem­ber of the fam­ily is happy in the knowl­edge that they got their way and sat­is­fied their own par­tic­u­lar foodie crav­ing. Ev­ery­one is smil­ing a lit­tle broader and no one is fight­ing over the iPad any­more. Slowly, as you cruise down the high­way past Pi­eter­mar­itzburg, they all doze off one by one, and you can sneak that de­li­cious pas­try out of your pocket and en­joy it in peace and quiet. Who said trav­el­ling had to be stress­ful?
