We are cur­rently in the golden age of board gam­ing, ac­cord­ing to Eu­gene Ver­meulen, Prod­uct Di­rec­tor for So­lar­pop, South Africa’s largest sup­plier of board game ti­tles (they have over 4,000). “Some of our top-sell­ing games in­clude Catan (known as the ‘New Mo­nop­oly’), Ticket to Ride, Banana­grams, Spot It, 5 Sec­ond Rule, the Shuf­fle Go se­ries and Co­de­names,” says Ver­meulen. So­lar­pop has also be­gun de­vel­op­ing lo­calised ver­sions of pop­u­lar games, with 5 Sec­ond Rule see­ing a SA ver­sion later this year, along with an Afrikaans edi­tion of Co­de­names.“We have started a move­ment called Un­plug Your­self (find it on Face­book) where we en­cour­age peo­ple to spend less time in front of screens and more time face-to-face with friends and fam­ily hav­ing fun and form­ing mem­o­ries that last.”
