Only 60% of Japanese homes had their own bathtubs by 1963. Houses were small, and besides, every area had a or public bath, with communal facilities large enough to serve all of the local residents. While a trip to an onsen (hot spring bath) is still a favourite Japanese outing, most Japanese homes now have their own bathtubs, and often some rather tech-savvy toilets to go with them!

With far-flung luxury holidays largely off the agenda this summer, you might be craving the opulence that a hotel bathroom can bring.With that in mind, we spoke to bathroom design expert George Holland and asked him to review six luxury hotel bathrooms and explain how we can incorporat­e elements from these into our own bathrooms at home.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL, FLORENCE

There is nothing utilitaria­n about the bathrooms at the Four Seasons in Florence.While a bathtub in the middle of the room might not be practical, you can still bring touches of opulence into your bathroom by incorporat­ing marble accessorie­s, wall lighting and even a gilded mirror to add interest.

THE SILO HOTEL, CAPE TOWN

Pops of clashing colour complement vintage vanity units to create a truly unique bathroom experience.While you might not be able to recreate the views from this hotel bathroom, you can take inspiratio­n by mixing the old and new together.Try a vintage chandelier style pendant light styled alongside a modern and brightly coloured storage bench.

THE SIAM, BANGKOK

THere, white subway tiles with dark grout complement the dark furniture, taps and sink, and this monochrome bathroom is one of the easiest and most cost-effective looks to recreate at home. Choosing a simple, white bathroom suite keeps costs down, so you can really splash out on the accessorie­s such as anthracite storage and matte black taps.

SAN CLEMENTE PALACE KEMPINSKI, VENICE

This is a great example of small space luxury where less really does mean more.The simple white free-standing bath is on an angle, which immediatel­y makes the space feel inviting. The glass shower enclosure allows the light to travel all the way through the space and reflect off the white walls and flooring, giving the illusion of a larger room.
