HEALTHY, HAPPY EYES

Eyes – now that’s a part of our bodies we don’t give a ton of thought to. But we should, because they’re one of the hardest-working organs we have, and are very precious to our quality of life. Of course, we could survive if they were to stop working, but the thought of losing some of the most beautiful sights known to us – a sunset, a vast natural landscape, the faces of our loved ones – is a scary one.

Unlike many other parts of our bodies, our eyes are on duty from the moment we open them in the morning – without a warm-up! We give these guys a solid runaround every day. But are we taking proper care of them so that they’re able to perform at their optimum for years to come?

Here are four tips for keeping your eyesight in top shape:

1. Make sure they’re tested regularly: It may feel unnecessary, especially if you’re convinced you have 20/20 vision, but the truth is that there are many conditions that can develop without any noticeable symptoms. Glaucoma (the damaging of the eye’s optic nerve), for example, can go undetected for a long time. And while it can be treated, the damage already done by the time it is diagnosed cannot be reversed.

2.Make an effort to keep your eyes protected from the sun: Get yourself and your family some quality sunglasses for the outdoors, and keep a hat handy too. The sun can be unforgiving on these sensitive organs.

3.Keep your daily diet as nutritious and wholesome as possible: Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in the likes of leafy green vegetables, blueberries and tomatoes can help to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, as does the beta-carotene we find in carrots. Citrus is also a goodie and sources of omega 3 can help to reduce the symptoms of dry-eye. 4.Keep working towards the goal of a healthy lifestyle: If you need any more reasons to quit smoking, here’s another one: Smoking is the greatest cause of macular degeneration after ageing. Heavy drinking can also significantly impact on your vision by impairing colour vision, central vision field and perception of contrast.

If you can turn these tips into lasting habits, you’ll ensure that not only do your eyes have the best chance for staying in good shape, but your overall health will benefit greatly too.
