Grade 6 learn­ers can ap­ply for the Stu­dent Spon­sor­ship Pro­gramme (SSP)Schol­ar­ships

The com­bined house­hold in­come must not ex­ceed R20 000 per month, to qual­ify to ap­ply for the schol­ar­ship pro­gramme.

Ap­pli­ca­tions are open for Grade 6 girl and boy learn­ers who achieve marks of 70% and above in Maths, Sci­ence and English and come from low-in­come homes - to be awarded a fiveyear SSP schol­ar­ship to at­tend one of our 25 part­ner schools in South Africa.

Since 2000, non-profit trust, Stu­dent Spon­sor­ship Pro­gramme (SSP), has given 1500 bur­saries to de­serv­ing schol­ars to at­tend top in­de­pen­dent and pub­lic high schools in the coun­try.

The schol­ar­ships given to date are val­ued at R150m,to at­tend schools in Johannesburg, Pre­to­ria, the KZN Mid­lands, Hill­crest, Gra­ham­stown, East Lon­don and Som­er­set West.

The ap­pli­cants must be in Grade 6, no older than 12, keen on sport and help­ing the com­mu­nity, and have lead­er­ship po­ten­tial. The com­bined house­hold in­come must not ex­ceed R20 000 per month, to qual­ify to ap­ply for the schol­ar­ship pro­gramme.

The 10-month re­cruit­ment process in­cludes an en­trance exam, in­ter­views with the par­ents and guardians and in­cludes tests to as­sess in­tel­lec­tual quo­tient (IQ) and emo­tional in­tel­li­gence (EQ) to con­clude with a camp to see how they get on with other young­sters in a team.

SSP aims to nur­ture fu­ture lead­ers with this five-year schol­ar­ship pro­gramme which in­cludes tu­ition, school uni­form, sports gear, books and lo­cal ex­cur­sions. The sup­port given is not only aca­demic and psy­cho-so­cial, it also cov­ers men­tor­ship and parental sup­port. Or­phans and vul­ner­a­ble chil­dren (OVCs) are of­fered ad­di­tional as­sis­tance.

In 2017, SSP scholar Melody Dube ma­tric­u­lated from St Mary’s School for Girls with eight dis­tinc­tions, thanks to her hard work and her SSP schol­ar­ship. Thebe Tsat­simpe (SSP Class of 2004from Red­hill School) is a top alum­nus and now study­ing at Har­vard Univer­sity in the US. If you know of de­serv­ing stu­dents, please urge them to ap­ply.
