FOUR TO FOLLOW

MDC commentators Themba Boyi and Grant Bisset select four players that have impressed them so far this season.

THEMBA BOYI SELECTS: SIBUSISO SIBEKO (Golden Arrows striker) The MDC’s top marksman has been in imperious form. His mixture of guile, speed of thought and deadly finishing has seen him assume the mantle of alpha male, the spearhead of the Golden Arrows attack. He’s bagged seven goals in as many games, despite often not being available for selection for Arrows’ reserve team, due to first team involvement. The impressive 20-year-old is an avid movie fan – the Fast and Furious franchise is a big favourite of his. Having commentated on several games he’s participated in, one can’t help but think the franchise’s title is an apt description of his playing style. The Durbanite came through Abafana Besthende’s youth set-up after joining the club in August 2013, and went on to make his debut against Pirates the following May. Who says Mzansi can’t produce top quality strikers? A creative, hardworking leader who is explosive as well – Sibusiso Sibeko, you just don’t know him yet.

ANTHONY GORDINHO (SuperSport United defender) He may be the lesser known of the two Gordinho brothers – older brother Lorenzo at Kaizer Chiefs probably wins in popularity – but the 19-year-old Matsatsantsa defender has been one of the most consistent players in MDC 2015/16. This is made even more impressive by the fact he’s had to adjust to playing in several different centre-back combinations. He has marshalled a defence that has often employed midfielders in their backfour with the command and expertise of a seasoned pro. Not too surprisingly, he possesses a high football IQ – he’s from good footballing stock, with his father Manny being a former footballer. The Portuguese played for the likes of Orlando Pirates and Benoni United. His football evolution from playing for Easterns in Benoni at the age of six, to passing through the Ajax, Chiefs and Pirates academies has seen the youngster find a football home in the country’s capital, Pretoria.
