CHAMPIONS Kaizer Chiefs named 26 players set to represent the club in African competition this year, with four places still up for grabs. They can therefore still add to their squad and fill up those open spots when the second period of registration re-opens on August 11. Chiefs started their 2016 Caf Champions League campaign against Comoros outfit Volcan de Moroni. South Africa’s other Champions League contenders, Mamelodi Sundowns began their campaign with a clash against Chicken Inn in Zimbabwe. Sundowns has registered 24 of the 30 allowed, with Lebohang Mokoena a notable omission. For the Confederation Cup, Bidvest Wits’ registered 30 of 30 allowed and will thus need to de-register players if they want to add others in August. A notable absentee is Papy Faty, who collapsed during a friendly against SuperSport United late last year and has not played since. Wits started the campaign with a trip to Seychelles to face Lightstars FC. Also in the Confederation Cup, Ajax registered 25 players, although Granwald Scott was registered before he left the club to join Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia. Ajax had announced their intention to pull out of the competition before making a u-turn, and traveled to Angola to face GD Sagrada Esperanca.
