DAVIDE SOMMA

-

Caps: 3 (2010-2011) Goals: 1 Position: Striker Somma was drafted into the national team set-up by then coach Pitso Mosimane after the 2010 FIFA World Cup and his arrival was greeted with much fanfare as his scoring exploits at Leeds United caught the attention of the media. Somma had left South Africa for the USA at the age of 11 and spent the early part of his career in Europe, utilising his Italian passport to feature for lower league clubs in Spain and Italy. He made his debut in November 2010, ironically against the USA, scored his first goal three months later in a friendly win over Kenya before making his final appearance in a crucial 0-0 draw with Egypt in Cairo in June 2011. The following month he picked up a serious knee injury in pre-season training at Leeds and his career never recovered. He made a handful of further appearances for the club, but after a number of setbacks with his knee, was essentially forced into retirement in 2013 at the age of 28. It is difficult to say what he might have achieved with the national team had injury not brought an end to his career, considering his early promise and good club record. Somma is now a coach for junior sides at Long Island United in New York. Hit or miss: Miss.
