STAR LETTER

The PSL’s changing landscape

- Sbusiso Biyela, via email

In the past, great players in South Africa chose to play for so-called big teams like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. But there’s been a definite shift lately, and I would like to congratulate Khulu Sibiya, Patrice Motsepe, Jose Ferreira and John Comitis for changing the nature of the South African football. Bidvest Wits, Supersport United, Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns are now all in the mix, not like in the past when the situation favoured Soweto teams. When my son grows up, he will be spoilt for choice in deciding which team to follow, not just by influence. I wish the sponsors channelling money to Chiefs and Pirates would consider teams like Golden Arrows and Free State Stars who have a track record of producing young talent. The past two seasons should be an eye-opener for the previous “giant teams” to move on with time.
