LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Teboho Mokoena’s late father, Alexis ‘Didi’ Motaung [left], is a former midfielder who made his name at Free State Stars before joining Hellenic under Gavin Hunt. Mokoena’s business manager Trevor Mosehathebe played with Motaung at Hellenic, and the two were very close friends. “Before Didi passed away, he told me about his boy who is a soccer player and asked me to look after him,” Mosehathebe recalls. “When Didi arrived at Hellenic, I used to share a flat with the late Solly Phetla. Gavin Hunt wanted Didi to settle down quickly in Cape Town and asked him to stay with us. We welcomed him and developed a good friendship. The fact that the three of us spoke SeSotho made things easy. He was a great person – he was always laughing and was fun to be around. He was reserved and spoke only when spoken to. His son is very similar to Didi and he was also a good player.”
