Chiefs to Sundowns

-

Muisi Ajao (Defender)

When Chiefs needed to stop strikers like Raphael Chukwu, Muisi Ajao was the go-to man. The burly Nigerian defender played for the Glamour Boys during the 1997/98 season under Paul Dolezar, winning the Rothmans Cup, before joining Sundowns the following season.

Brian Baloyi (Goalkeeper)

Brian Baloyi made his Chiefs debut in 1993 and played for the club until 2004 when he was snapped up by Patrice Motsepe. At the age of 30, Baloyi was still on top of his game and helped the Brazilians win back-to-back League titles, the SAA Supa 8 and the 2008 Nedbank Cup.

Punch Masenamela (Defender)

Punch Masenamela was a regular left-back at Chiefs under coach Vladimir Vermezomic and caught many fans by surprise when he switched from Naturena to Chloorkop in 2011. At Sundowns, Masenamela helped the club win the 2013/14 League title before he lost his place to Tebogo Langerman, and moved to Polokwane City.

Derrick Spencer (Defender)

Derrick Spencer was a Ted Dumitru type of a defender, someone who could read the game and initiate attacks from the back. He swapped the gold and black for yellow and green in July 2008.

Jabulani Mendu (Midfielder)

“S-Curl” was a highly-rated midfielder at Moroka Swallows before joining Chiefs during the 2003/04 season. But due to his bad relationship with Dumitru, he spent most of his time at Chiefs sitting on the bench before moving to Sundowns.

Thela Ngobeni (Goalkeeper)

Thela Ngobeni spent his entire Chiefs career as an understudy to Itumeleng Khune. In 2010, he joined Sundowns with the hope getting more game time, but struggled to do so until he was loaned to Free State Stars.

Thuso Phala (Forward)

The speedy winger made his name at Platinum Stars before he caught the attention of Amakhosi during the 2007/08 season. At Chiefs, he failed to cement his place in the team and was used in a swap deal with Sundowns which saw Josta Dladla move in the other direction.

Marco Mthembu (Defender)

The left-back joined Chiefs during the 1999/00 season from the United States where he was studying. He helped Amakhosi win many trophies including the CAF Cup Winners Cup (Mandela Cup). After his contract expired at the end of 2001/02 season, he then joined rivals Sundowns.

David Kannemeyer (Defender)

David Kannemeyer won the League with Cape Town Spurs as a youngster and ended his last season with Chiefs by winning the League in 2004. He then joined Sundowns and helped the Brazilians win the League in his second season in Pretoria, before going on to win another League title with SuperSport United.

Marc Batchelor (Forward)

Marc Batchelor played for Kaizer Chiefs under coach Paul Dolezar where he won the 1998 Rothmans Cup. And when Dolezar joined Sundowns he brought his ‘Big Animal’ with him. Batch’s stay at Sundowns lasted for two seasons and ended when he joined Moroka Swallows in 2001 at the age of 30.
