Simon Murray’s father Gary (59) also played professional football in his younger days. It is said Murray senior already knew his son would make it into the professional ranks since he was seven years old as his scoring record was phenomenal at that age. Throughout his time back home, Simon always had his father in the stands for just about all of his matches in the junior ranks, all the way up to senior level. Just like his son, Gary was also a striker and played for Montrose, Dundee and Hibernian. “He was a good athlete and an influence in my career,” Simon says. “I hope he can come and watch a few of my games next year and he will definitely enjoy it as well. Growing up, I wanted to be just like him, play the game he played as well as score as many goals as he did. He was a big influence, just like he was in other parts of my life, not only football. He helped me be where I am now.” Gary was forced into retirement by injury in May 1991, a year before Simon was born.
