Kick Off

Kick Off November 2020 edition

-

“Europe, Europe…” Three articles stand out in the November 2020 issue regarding PSL players aspiring to play on European soil.

In one article, Alan Koch emphasises: “As South Africans we get caught up in the European dream, and that needs to be adjusted. It needs to become the Football Dream.”

The article on Raphael Chukwu [ Where are they now?] is a good example. He states that what he was getting at Sundowns made him reject an overseas offer. It shows that a successful career can certainly be made in the PSL.

Former Ajax Cape Town player Bantu Mzwakali says that having a good mentor abroad becomes important. So, it is not always all love, fresh air and roses on the other side.

Lessons are learnt from European clubs and systems. The November 2020 issue’s “Secret Footballer” mentions that Ajax Cape Town had the opportunity to model the club on that of their Amsterdam counterparts. Unfortunately, ties were cut. But there is almost no doubt that the revived Cape Town Spurs and hopefully others will continue to use the successful models instilled by Ajax Amsterdam.

Here’s to creating successful football dreams – whether in Europe, the MLS or at home in the PSL.
