NATIONAL TEAM BOSSES
• THOMAS ‘ZERO’ JOHNSON became the first South African to coach the national team of another country when he led Botswana from 1987 to 1989.
A co-founder of Kaizer Chiefs, he spent most of his post playing career in Botswana and had a big impact on their football at both national team and club level.
• MLUNGISI ‘PROFESSOR’ NGUBANE was named Namibia coach after the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations, where they lost 4-1 to Bafana Bafana in the group stage. He stayed only four months, however, losings his first two games and drawing at home to Angola in the COSAFA Cup. Later Ngubane had a spell in Swaziland at Mbabane Highlanders.
• Twice Bafana Bafana boss, EPHRAIM ‘SHAKES’ MASHABA was appointed coach of Swaziland’s Sihlangu in 2008 and worked there until 2010. He was touted for a second spell in 2018 but eventually not appointed.
• THABO SENONG moved from taking South Africa to two Under-20 World Cups to coach of Lesotho, where he is bidding for a first ever place in the Africa Cup of Nations finals for the mountain kingdom.
• In the Basotho league, former Bloemfontein Celtic and Under-23 defender JAMES MADIDLANI won two championships with Bantu FC in 2017 and 2018.
