Andre Arendse became the oldest player in profession­al football history in this country when he played for Bidvest Wits in 2013, beating a more than 30-year-old record.

Arendse’s mark is 45 years, 10 months and four days, beating by three months the record held by equally legendary goalkeeper Trevor Gething.

Arendse was goalkeeper coach at the club when he was registered in midst of an injury crisis and then pressed into service to help Wits out of a goalkeepin­g crisis. He saw his club to a 2-1 away win over against University of Pretoria.

Gething’s record was 45 years, seven months and 22 days. He also came out of retirement several times to help clubs in crisis, playing for Pretoria Callies in 1979 aged 42 and for Arcadia in 1981 and again in 1982, when he filled in for the injured Deshi Bhaktawer for 10 matches.

Bruce Grobbelaar was coach of Hellenic and played the last game of the 2001-02 season against Kaizer Chiefs at the age of 44 years, six months and 21 days. He let in four goals.

The oldest outfield player is John Moshoeu at 42 years, 4 months, 27 days when he played his last game for AmaZulu in May 2008.
