Let’s honour Jomo Sono

- By Letladi wa Ga-Mphahlele, Maralaleng

I think it is time that SAFA, if not South Africa as a Republic, should honour Jomo Sono for his contribution to the football fraternity. Jomo’s name should be recognised, he’s been too productive for SA football, but our government seems to be too blind to see that. If you still remember the squad that won us the 1996 Afcon, it was made up of Jomo Sono’s products. The likes of Helman Mkhalele and Mark Fish, just to mention a few. Remember, it is the same squad that represented us at the 1998 World Cup in France. With another product of Jomo Sono,

Phil Masinga, whose goal against Congo-Brazzaville in

1997 qualified us for France.

The very same Jomo Sono took us to the Afcon in

Burkina Faso in 1998, he brought home a silver medal after losing to Egypt in the final. That’s where he introduced Benedict McCarthy to the South African football. The very same young lad who scored seven of the eight goals that Bafana Bafana managed to score in the tournament and he’s the alltime leading goal scorer.

This man has a very rich history in South African football and he really deserves to be honoured while he’s still alive.

Jomo has been so productive to our football but not even a single street in one of the biggest cities in the country is named after him.

I hope his efforts will be appreciated and something good being done in his honour. If they don’t think of naming anything after him, then a statue will be better.
