PIRATES COACHES SINCE THE ‘DOUBLE TREBLE’

-

Orlando Pirates have gone through many coaching changes since the historic back-to-back ‘Double Treble’ seasons. Despite reaching a few Cup finals on the way, the club has seen very little success in terms of winning trophies with the 2014 Nedbank Cup and this season’s MTN8 the only two trophies they have won.

ROGER DE SA

Roger de Sa led Orlando Pirates to three cup finals – the MTN8, Telkom Knockout and the CAF Champions League – and fell short in all of them, as well as the League.

VLADIMIR VERMEZOVIC

The appointment of the former Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic at Orlando Pirates came as a surprise. But the Serbian was the first coach to help Orlando Pirates win a trophy since the Double Treble seasons, when he won the 2014 Nedbank Cup, beating Bidvest Wits 3-1 in the final. VV resigned midway through the 2014/15 season.

ERIC TINKLER

Eric Tinkler joined the Buccaneers as Roger de Sa’s righthand man and remained at the club when De Sa left. The former Bafana Bafana midfielder took over as a caretake coach following the departure of Vermezovic, before getting appointed on fulltime basis. Under Tinkler, The Buccaneers reached the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup final but lost 2-1 to Etoile de Sahel of Tunisia in the two-legged decider. He also reached the final of the 2016 Nedbank Cup but lost 3-2 to SuperSport United.

MUHSIN ERTUGRAL

Muhsin Ertugral’s time at Orlando Pirates will always be remembered for his resignation during a post-match interview following a 6-1 defeat to SuperSport United. Ertugral replaced Tinkler at the beginning of the 2016/17 season but left months later in November.

KJELL JONEVRET

Just three months after Ertugral’s departure, unknown Kjell Jonevret took over as the Pirates coach in February 2017, leading the team to the Nedbank Cup final where they lost 4-1 to SuperSport United. His stay at the club only lasted four months with only two league wins in 13 matches.

MILUTIN SREDOJEVIC

Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has always been a favourites amongst the Bucs fans but his second stint at the club lasted two trophyless seasons before resigning a few matches into the 2019/20 season to join Zamalek.

RHULANI MOKWENA

Rhulani Mokwena, who joined from Mamelodi Sundowns as Sredojevic’s assistant, took over a few matches into the 2019/20 campaign and was sent on loan to Chippa United following the arrival of Josef Zinnbauer in December 2019.
