CHIEFS’ KEEPING QUARTET

-

DANIEL AKPEYI

For all that he has done, Akpeyi has never been a popular choice at the club and now has to negotiate his way from the back of the queue. He has played the most football of all the keepers at the club since he joined in January 2019 but is still strangely treated with suspicion. At his age and with the contribution that he has made when brought in, he will feel he also deserves to get minutes. Last season he kept 12 clean sheets in 24 games, conceding 21 goals, while the previous season he played 10 games without conceding.

BRUCE BVUMA

Has moved to the front of the queue this term and will feel justified in wanting to play more than he has ever done since being promoted to the first team in 2017. He won’t find satisfaction in being a mere reserve option providing cover but will want to establish himsel l thitis t erm.

ITUMELENG KHUNE

That showing against Sundowns in the MTN8 quarterfinals wasn’t inspiring, just like has been the case in recent seasons. Just last season Khune conceded 25 goals in 18 games, keeping just four clean sheets. These are numbers that he won’t be proud of after also o a in madem de little contribution when the club lost the title on the last day the previous season. Instead of riding on his name, the veteran keeper needs to match it up with current form.

BRANDON PETERSEN

Marked his delayed arrival in the Carling Black Label Cup with an impressive showing after replacing Khune. However, just like he has always known, he will have to wait for his chance. Sat on the bench for the MTN8 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns and having not played at all last season has started off at a disadvantage. In the season that he last played (2019/20) he kept eight clean sheets in 19 games at BidVest Wits.
