The PSL needs VAR

- By Cuthbert Fungene, NkowaNkowa Township, Letaba

Referee Jelly Chavani and his assistant are on suspension after granting Kaizer Chiefs an undeserved penalty against AmaZulu.

The fact of the matter is that such mistakes are very common and, because of such errors, many teams are deprived of the points they deserve.

In order to avoid sanctioning referees, other progressive countries have introduced the Video Assistant Referee ( VAR). This implies that if we had VAR in South Africa, Jelly and his colleagues wouldn’t have been suspended. VAR is an acknowledgement that mistake do happen ... to err is human.

Secondly, our soccer system allows for points to be docked if, for an example, a team is found to have benefited by fielding players who don’t qualify. Now, since Chavani and his

colleague have given Chiefs a point they don’t deserve, why is it not docked?

This suspension shows SAFA agrees there has been a mistake and, under normal circumstances, it should be rectified.

I’m not against Kaizer Chiefs but I’m for VAR, so that people like Chavani and his colleagues are spared the humiliation that goes with suspension.
