AFCON adjustments needed

- By Wandile Mtana, Uitenhage

It’s time we face reality and make adjustments in CAF tournaments to protect our players.

CAF tournaments deserve respect like all football competitions that are being hosted under FIFA banner.

The African players have shown keen interest to prioritise their allegiance of patriotism despite being treated poorly by their respective football clubs. We’ve seen players forced to prematurely retire from the national team cause because clubs perceive them as their asset.

Now Cameroon has been seen as COVID-19 high risk turf because it is on Africa soil, this is an excuse to hold players back from national team duty.

When the European Championship happens everything stops, Leagues are halted to observe the tournament till the end, but when it comes to CAF tournament, Euro clubs become problematic to acknowledge our tournament and release African players. I understand our African players are playing c crucial roles in their clubs. The best players in t the world at the moment are coming down o on our soil to honour their country’s fixtures, w which is proud moment to the continent. I once suggested the CAF tournament be h held same dates as European Championship t to prevent unforeseeable circumstances that fo forces our African players to face wrath of t their clubs, and this could benefit players too. T The club vs country tension could be eased o or in future clubs would refuse to have more A African players to avoid current conflict. We h have players that could decide League’s title r races and coaches might feel their jobs could b be in jeopardy with African players.
