There is a long list of Orlando Pirates players to choose from over the years when trying to put together a list of their greatest stars, and there will be many who have not made the cut who would have had a great shout.

But we select our 10 best Buccaneers from the history of the club, in no particular order.

Patson Banda

Pirates’ goalkeeper in the 1960s and 70s, Banda is regarded by many as the greatest to wear the gloves for the team and he was worth the entrance fee alone for his spectacula­r dives and heroic bravery in the face of opposition strikers. He won many a game for The Buccaneers in his lengthy stay with the team.

Happy Jele

The only current member of the squad on the list, Jele has been a stalwart for the side for the last 15 years and was a key part of their ‘Double Treble’ between 2010 and 2012 that was one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. He has shown remarkable consistenc­y over the years and this season set a mark for most starts for the club, beating the longheld record of William Okpara. When he finally leaves, Jele will be afforded legend status.

Lucky Lekgwathi

Like Jele, Lekgwathi is a former captain of the side who spent 12 years with Pirates and was also a big part of their ‘Double Treble’ success. He made almost 350 starts and was the kind of player who left everything on the field. Lekgwathi arrived in 2002 from Ria Stars and left the club in 2014, some would say prematurel­y.

Webster Lichaba

A midfielder who would turn into a fine leader at Pirates and help the side to three league titles after joining as a 19-year-old in 1973. He later captained the team and enjoyed
