MALAWI’S PSL EXPORTS

-

For all the exports that Malawi has fed the PSL, the big three of domestic football has not been a popular destination with only six players featuring for Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns since the start of the Premier Soccer League in August 1996.

Only Patrick Mabedi has been at Chiefs, where he lasted eight years as a player before also working as an assistant coach.

At Sundowns it has only been Chancey Gondwe and the legendary Ernest Mtawali playing for the club pre-PSL era.Mtawali also played with Pirates in the twilight of his playing career. Other Malawians at Pirates were Chiukepo Msowoya and Josephy Kamwendo, with Gabadinho Mhango the latest. Msowoya flopped, while for all his talents Kamwendo struggled to pin down a regular place.

“THE ISSUE MIGHT BE THAT THE TYPE OF PLAY AT PIRATES AND THE NATIONAL TEAM IS A LITTLE BUT DIFFERENT.
