5 suspects nabbed for dagga in Plett

- Yolandé Stander

Five suspects were arrested in Plettenberg Bay for possession and cultivation of dagga this week.

Police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse says police obtained a search warrant for a farm in Rietvlei on the outskirts of the town.

“When police arrived at 13:30 on 7 June 2018, they found 47 dagga plants and close to 6.5kg of dagga on the property,” Pieterse says.

The estimated value of the drugs is still to be determined.

Five suspects, all between the ages of 19 and 47, were arrested on the spot.

The group appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday 11 June on charges of dealing in, cultivation and possession of dagga. The matter was postponed for further investigation.

This follows after local police had another success in their battle against drugs last month when a man was arrested for allegedly transporting dagga with a street value of about R800 000. Police found 17 bags full of cannabis, weighing about 530kg, in his vehicle.

The previous day four more suspects, believed to have been linked to the man arrested in Plett, was apprehended at the Tsitsikamma Toll Plaza. Police found dagga, with a street value of about R500 000, in his bakkie.
