“P­lett Wa­tch star­ted a dri­ve to rai­se the ne­ces­sa­ry funds”

Ho­li­day­ma­kers and re­si­dents en­joy­ed an in­ci­dent-free ti­me on P­let­ten­berg Bay’s be­a­ches du­ring the se­cond week of the s­chool ho­li­days, af­ter the com­mu­ni­ty ban­ded to­get­her to man the to­wn’s main be­a­ches with li­fe­guards.

The to­wn’s be­a­ches are not man­ned du­ring off-se­a­son, which stret­ches until No­vem­ber 1, but fol­lo­wing se­ver­al sea e­mer­gen­cies du­ring the first week, which in­clu­ded the de­ath of a be­a­chgoer, the lo­cal com­mu­ni­ty rai­sed e­nough funds to ha­ve li­fe­guards on the to­wn’s most po­pu­lar swim­ming be­a­ches.

P­lett Wa­tch star­ted a dri­ve to rai­se the ne­ces­sa­ry funds to ha­ve li­fe­guards on main be­a­ches for the re­main­der of the s­chool ho­li­days. Ma­ri­us Ven­ter of P­lett Wa­tch, which star­ted the dri­ve to rai­se the funds, said that within 24 hours they had rai­sed mo­re than R11 000 to em­ploy six li­fe­guards on Cen­tral, Rob­berg and Look­out be­a­ches.

“The li­fe­guards re­por­ted for du­ty the fol­lo­wing day and we are hap­py to re­port that t­he­re we­re no in­ci­dents on the to­wn’s be­a­ches du­ring the last week of the s­chool ho­li­days,” Ven­ter said.

He than­ked e­very in­di­vi­du­al who con­tri­bu­ted to the dri­ve in­clu­ding Ne­vil­le Pe­ter­sen from the lo­cal ra­te­pay­ers' as­so­ci­a­ti­on, Li­sa Na­gel from P­lett Wa­tch, P­let­ten­berg Bay C­ri­me P­re­ven­ti­on As­so­ci­a­ti­on (PBCPA) pa­trol­lers, the PBCPA Ra­pid Re­spon­se te­am, A­li­son Bry­ant from Keep P­lett C­le­an and lo­cal John­ny P­rin­ce.

“Last but not le­ast we would li­ke to thank all the li­fe­guards that we­re not of­fi­ci­al­ly on du­ty, but we­re on the be­ach to help w­he­ne­ver it was nee­ded. You are all su­per­stars.”

Bi­tou Mu­ni­ci­pa­li­ty al­so fixed all the bro­ken lig­hts on Main Be­ach.

“It is tru­ly in­spi­ring to see e­ver­yo­ne co­me to­get­her li­ke this and to see the im­pact it can ha­ve on a com­mu­ni­ty,” Ven­ter con­clu­ded.
