Knysna man sure knows how to make a cuppa
Sibusiso Khumalo, a 31-year-old barista, represented Knysna Wimpy in the fast food chain’s regional competition last week, which involved making cups of coffee using different famous brands, and was crowned the best barista in the region for the third year running.
The competition took place on 27 November in Port Elizabeth as baristas from across the Eastern Cape battled it out, and Khumalo’s magic saw him scooping the winning title once again this year.
The barista says he has always had an obsession with making the perfect cup of coffee and that winning the title again is a big achievement for him.
“Being a barista is a rather odd profession, I admit, and sometimes people don’t understand what goes into it, so getting the slightest recognition means the world to me,” the excited Khumalo says. “The regional competitions are always nerve-wracking because I feel the need to always do better than the last time and I must say, the win tastes almost good as my cup of coffee.”
He says he doesn’t take the opportunity lightly and that through these competitions he has learnt so much not only about the brands but about himself.
The cheerful Khumalo, who says he is already looking forward to next year’s competition, cheekily concludes, “If you’re having a bad day, try me out. It’s the best in the region!”
