Cox duo to light up your night
Tony Cox, one of Southern Africa’s most revered guitarists, proved this past weekend with the first instalment of his December Nights in Sedgefield show that he truly is a master of the fingerpicking style of playing guitar, and seems to have passed on his masterful genes to daughter Thuli.
On Saturday 15 December in the St Anthony’s Church hall, Tony and Thuli put on a festival of sounds that meshed funky and jazz, folk and rock 'n' roll-flavoured music to the absolute delight of 90-odd music lovers gathered at the intimate setting.
Through their own renditions of classic rock and jazz tunes and other oldies like The Lady is a Tramp, to some of Tony’s own well-known “dinosaur-ish” jams as he called them, to classic South African tunes like Sarie Marais and Johnny Clegg’s Impi – which he turned into an even more driving, goosebump-inducing track reverberating through the church hall – the Cox pair had heads bopping all through the night. Tony’s own version of the Baby Elephant Walk, combined with a bass line derived from who knows where, was testament to his musical genius. Thuli’s rendition, accompanied by her father, of a Norah Jones track sounded almost as sweet and soulful as the original artist performing it herself.
If you want to experience Tony’s magical fingerpicking yourself, and want to see what his offspring is capable of, there are two more nights left on 22 and 29 December. Call 044 343 1870 for ticket sales as no tickets are available at the door.
