Is there any better indication of resilience than passing Grade 12 exceptionally well after your father was shot mere metres from your home some months before the final exams, missing three weeks of school as a consequence and dealing with the scars?

Despite all that life threw at him, a triumphant Dumisani Molosi, son of the late Knysna councillor Victor Molosi, passed matric at Concordia High School with a bachelor entry and made not only his family but all those who loved his father proud.

This is a story about a young man who started every day with a morning jog with his father before everything changed on that fateful day. The 17-year-old has been accepted at the University of Western Cape to study for a bachelor of arts degree but now hopes he will be reconsidered for an LLB degree after receiving his final results. “I have always wanted to study law and the situation I now find myself in after my dad’s death, has made me want to study it even more,” said Molosi.

The young man said doing so well means this is the beginning of his journey and that after studying he hopes to come back to work in Knysna.

Molosi said his friends at the school became his light during the dark cloud that hung over him after his father’s killing. “My friends kept me updated when I wasn’t at school and helped me catch up with work in time to write the trial examinations.”

Nothing could ever prepare him for his father’s passing so close to the exams, he said. “But I had to focus on my studies and remember that he always pushed me to study and I pushed through until the final exams – not just for me but for him as well.” People have extended their love and support to Dumisani on social media, congratulating and celebrating his courage and his ability to perform so well under the circumstances. Said the young Molosi, “Many of these people were my father’s friends and they knew how much I loved him and how much he valued education, so they’re pretty much picking up from where he left off and their goodwill will not go unnoticed.”
