‘MG’ stands for ‘more giving’
The MG Car Club has recently passed on funds raised by its work during the Simola Hill Climb in May to needy organisations in Knysna.
Each year since its inception, club members have volunteered as officials for the annual motoring event, and each year have received a useful sum in appreciation of their efforts. This contribution they distribute, in kind, among deserving local causes and charities.
Club members were again active in 2019, in their usual slot in the Hillclimb pits, keeping control and getting competitors to the line for each of their timed runs up the hill.
First on the list was the Knysna Disaster Fund, and on Thursday 22 August they received R10 000 worth of blankets.
This donation was received by the fund’s committee alongside their long-standing chair Daphne Hennessey.
Hennessey explained that the committee, while in recent time easily confused with the Knysna Fire Disaster committee, has in fact been in operation assisting the destitute for more than 30 years. They were particularly active after the Knysna Fires in 2017, of course, but their work is ongoing and they were very pleased to receive such a useful donation, she said. Hennessey also voiced their appreciation to the club for the arrangements made to help store the blankets until they could be distributed where needed.
Next on the list was Knysna Epilepsy Centre that is home to 50 permanent residents and caters to 21 day-care visitors, with a donation of power tools and other items to the value of R10 000 to upgrade their workshop.
This handover took place on Tuesday 27 August at the centre. Before their handover, MG Club chair Bruce Henderson said, “It is a privilege for us to be able to assist both the Disaster Fund and Epilepsy.
The latter has suffered financially as a result of a 40% reduction in their government funding and the tools will enable their residents to produce wooden items for sale to boost the facility’s income.”
