Drug search at primary school leads to bust
A case of dealing in drugs was opened after narcotics with an estimated street value of R18 000 were handed over to the police at Concordia on Tuesday 27 August.
A mother’s nightmare led to the bust wherein three suspects aged 23, 27 and 39 were arrested and 198 Mandrax tablets, 28 bankies and a small bag of cannabis confiscated. This operation was a combined effort by the Knysna Taxi Forum and the Mayitshe Community Forum.
The mother, who was concerned about her child’s changed behaviour, had reported the matter to Mayitshe and requested their intervention.
On Tuesday morning, the community group requested permission from the school principal to do a search and found one of the learners with drugs.
As they left the school, a member from Mayitshe said, they saw a learner walking out of a house near the school during school hours, and upon investigation there found weapons, tik, Mandrax and dagga. The police were later called to the scene.
Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said, "As the police we appreciate community police partnerships in dealing with criminal activities especially when addressing drug outlets, but the Knysna SAPS station management strongly discourage any unlawful conduct from the community. We want to appeal to the public to report illegal activities to the police immediately. All information will be dealt with confidentially."
