Plett’s possible pickpocket epidemic

- Yolande Stander

It appears that pickpockets are operating in Plettenberg Bay after two incidents were reported over the past week. Lisa Nagel from the town’s neighbourhood watch group Plett Watch said the incidents involved suspects pinching cellphones from unsuspecting shoppers in Plett.

“The phones were removed from the victims’ handbags while they were shopping,” Nagel said. “The end of the year is almost upon us and people are becoming desperate. Please be extremely cautious while out shopping.”

Nagel suggested that shoppers should ensure their bags are either zipped shut or held in a position where it is always visible. “Be aware of people jostling you or standing too close – they may be checking to see if they can grab something out of your bag.” She further said should anyone fall victim to a pickpocket, they should immediately report the matter to local police and notify their cellphone service provider to blacklist the phone. Another opportunistic crime took place in Plett during the week. This time it was a theft from a local residence. “The home’s alarm was not activated and it appears a window was closed but not latched. The perpetrators managed to just push it open. There were workers in the street when the victim left the property.” Nagel said residents should ensure that windows and doors are securely locked before leaving their homes. “Also make sure your alarm is activated, especially when there is building or working going on in your area. Opportunistic criminals abound and will take any chance they can.”
