Tight squash as Knysna courts its best

- Blake Linder

Knysna Squash Club's latest social league concluded last week, and after six weeks of riveting squash action, team The Heads was crowned victors having won the most games.

Every year the squash club hosts five different leagues that give anyone and everyone a chance to enjoy the best squash moves Knysna has to offer. The five social leagues are singles, doubles, handicap challenge, ladder challenge, and team league, with the latest always a fun way for newcomers to the sport, to become integrated into the setup at Knysna Squash Club – which prides itself on being a familyfriendly social gathering place.

The league kicked off midway through last month on 12 September with six weeks of squash action lying in wait for just under 40 players, bringing together people of all ages, with the older players expectedly running the show on the court thanks to their experience and knowledge of the game granting them superior court management.

Matches were mostly played on Thursday evenings once everyone had finished off work, and were played in traditional squash format. For those who aren't all too familiar with the sport, a squash match is played in a best out of five games-style. A player wins a game when they reach 15 points and leads by two or more points, and ultimately the match if they win enough games that their opponent can't catch up with in the remaining games.

The league eventually drew to a close last week with the final matches being played on Tuesday 15 October. After a month-and-a-half of hard work on the courts, The Heads (Lofty Fourie, Sean Mackenzie, Shaun van der Merwe, Phil Patton, John Harris, and Kerry Viljoen) was crowned the winner of the league while team Red Bridge (Altus Kapp, Dave Shilton, Rian Huisamen, Fabio de Sousa, Shelley Colananni, and Christy Jacobs) finished second with team Lesiure Isle (Oz Campbell, Dave Peacock, Johan Rautenbach, Brian Holdsworth, Linds Taylor, and Donovan Murphy) ending third.
