Rocks to Robberg rocks
Greenwood Bay College and Nature's Valley Trust hosted their annual Rocks to Robberg Race and Beach Cleanup on Saturday 9 November, with much success as scores of people joined for the day.
The annual event is moving from strength to strength, and once again participants showed their support in masses, deciding to brave the rain and wind that swept across the beach.
The races started off at the Robberg 1 beach area (Beacon Island Rocks), with two distances on offer – 8.6km and 4km – that could be either run or walked depending on how participants wanted to tackle the course, and the winners of each division won amazing prizes sponsored by local businesses.
The majority of participants took part in the shorter distance, which was coined as the Fun Run for the day.
Simon Pfister was the fastest across the line here with a time of 15:02, followed by Charlie Proctor (17:14) and Sam Proctor (17:20). The fastest girl to finish couldn't be separated, as Nieve Slack and Willow Mullins finished in exactly the same time of 19:26, while Sophia Jackson was the third girl with a time of 21:09.
In the longer 8.6km race, runners would have undoubtedly had to pace themselves a bit more, and it was here where Yolanda Futhuse was first to finish in 34:34, followed by Mark Frazer-Mackenzie (36:37) and Gerhard van Niekerk (37:25). Catherine Proctor was the first lady over the line in 42:52, followed by Alice Evans (48:18) and Chenoa Gips (53:19).
Even though the running might not be for everyone, those who did not partake in the races enjoyed themselves by joining GBC and NVT in cleaning up the spectacular stretch of beach, including the Blue Flag-status Robberg 5.
