Hornlee Primary tops in girls rugby contest

- Blake Linder

After four weeks of rugby action all around Greater Knysna, the TWRA Primary Schools Girls Rugby Programme concluded last week Friday, with Hornlee Primary taking top spot.

The Titan's Women's Rugby Academy (TWRA) initiative was started by Aschin Klein, the academy's head coach, as a means for U14 girls to have a chance to play competitive rugby while affording them the necessary exposure too. The programme involved four primary schools from the Greater Knysna area – Hornlee, Sunridge, Fraaisig and Rheenendal – with games being held at various locations over the course of the programme.

The girls played in a 10-a-side format, with schools playing each other once in each round, with the top two teams to qualify for the final while the other two would play out for third place. This saw Sunridge and Rheenendal go into the third-place playoff while Hornlee and Fraaisig would battle it out for top prize. The two finals would be played at Loerie Park on Friday 22 November, with the third place playoff kicking off first shortly after 15:00.

Rheenendal started the game off quickly, scoring a try straight from kick-off. This would be their only points of the game however, as Sunridge would totally dominate the remainder of the game, out-muscling their opponents to secure third place with a 40-5 victory. The gold final would be a far tenser affair however, with Hornlee and Fraaisig more evenly matched.

The two sides played a very highintensity game, showcasing the very best of their skills. Hornlee would however manage to one-up their opponents, closing out the gold medal with a 20-10 victory.
