Keen golfers flock to Knysna Golf Club contest
After just over a month of golf being back on the greens and fairways at Knysna Golf Club, the club held its first Wednesday and Saturday competitions during lockdown last week.
Golf was given the green light to return to play on 9 June, and KGC opened its doors the very next day to a sold-out course. Since then, business has slowly but surely picked up for the club again. KGC resident professional Chris Dixon pointed out that they had their two busiest days last week since reopening, being the competition days. "We had 147 bookings on Wednesday, our best day yet, and on Saturday we had about 120," he said. "But, Wednesdays are generally our best days, we tend to average just over 130 every Wednesday."
The club's competitions are held in various formats, and are played by individuals who sign up for tee times between 10:00 and 13:00.
The first contest since reopening came on Wednesday 29 July in the better-ball format, and saw the team of Dave Phillips and Garaham Ive emerge victorious with 46 points, with Nick Hall and Kenn Watt in second (44 points), and Kevin Horack and Hendri van der Merwe in third place (44 points).
Three days later, competition returned to the greens at KGC, but this time in the medal format.
With stunning, perfect golf weather on the day, golfers set out to tackle the task at hand. After 18 holes, it was Darrel Witbooi who won the first Saturday competition's A-division with a nett of 77; Errol Siebrits winning the B-division with a nett of 71; and Glen Boscombe who won the C-division with a nett of 72. In the ladies competitions, Tanya Lightley won the silver division with a nett of 77 while Vanessa Cloete won the bronze section with a nett of 71.
