Sewage spill: cry me a river
It is a long-standing problem with disastrous consequences. For the past two months, sewage from a manhole on the banks of the Mitchell River has been seeping into the river, making its way to the Garden Route Dam, the source of Georgians' tap water. Calls logged from residents of Madeliefie Street in Denneoord to George Municipality to report the problem are diligently tended to, but unfortunately the problem keeps recurring within mere days. "We have a bigger issue at hand," said a nearby resident who wishes to stay anonymous. "It's been really bad the last two months, but this is an historical issue. There has always been problems with that manhole. It is time that the real issue is addressed." Some believe that tree roots might be the cause of the problem.
The latest sewage spill at the manhole occurred last week Friday, and was attended to on Monday 7 September. Within 48 hours the drain was seeping again - into the river. Feedback from George Municipality is being awaited.
