Clean-up at Vic Bay after heavy rain

- Eugene Gunning

Thanks to the efforts of community members, Victoria Bay is looking spick and span again after heavy rains last weekend washed up lots of rubbish into the bay and the beach. After a group of about 50 people conducted a clean-up on Monday, all is back to normal, and even better.

Gigs Celliers, owner and investor in the Vic Bay Surf Shop, said torrential rains fell on Saturday. Combined with a south-easterly wind, plastic and other garbage washed up into Ballots Bay and Victoria Bay. He said it is good for the George community to have a beach such as Victoria Bay.

Although the George Municipality does a fantastic job, the Surf Shop and local surfers decided to spearhead a quick response.

They turned up at low tide, around midday on Monday. “It was a very successful event,” said Celliers, who thanked everybody who participated. Neil Schalkwyk, a resident who took part with his son, Suede, said the beach is the responsibility of all who use it. People must be there in both good and bad times.
