- Alida de Beer

Since the beginning of October, an increase of 120% in new active Covid-19 cases was reported in the Kannaland area, followed by 80% in Bitou and 65% in the Mossel Bay area.

The average number of active cases in the Garden Route has shown an increase from 244 to 279 over the past week; however, compared with the beginning of October, there has been an overall decrease from 311 to 279.

In the past week, a total of 227 new infections was recorded in the district, bringing the total number of recorded cases to 10 320. Up until Tuesday night, 13 October, 369 deaths have been recorded, six of which were during the past week.

59 new cases in George

George recorded 59 new cases in the past week and now has 104 active cases. As of Tuesday night, 13 October, the total number of cases recorded in George stands at 3 672.

In a media statement by the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) this week, Disaster Management chief Gerhard Otto expressed his concern about some people not adhering to hygiene protocols. “From what I have seen, many people in the Garden Route no longer abide to these basic rules, not only compromising their own health but also the health of those around them.”

He warned that in other countries it has been demonstrated that a “second wave is directly linked to human behaviour”. Otto referred to news reports about a 25-year-old man from the United States with no comorbidities who got infected for a second time. The second infection was much worse and the man was hospitalised.
