PLETTENBERG BAY - A raid on a Kwanokuthula home last week led to the confiscation of several firearms, ammunition and drugs.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said police gathered intelligence about illegal firearms and drugs and subsequently orchestrated a raid on a house in Nkqubela Street at 18:40 on 11 August.

The search was performed by officers of the public order police unit, George crime intelligence and the Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team. Police seized four handguns, 122 rounds of ammunition, cellphones, a flat-screen television set, a computer screen, burglary implements and 22g of tik (estimated street value of R22 000). Officers also found several items of police uniform in the main bedroom. Six men, aged between 32 and 50, were arrested and are facing charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, drugs, burglary implements, and suspected stolen goods.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court this week.

"The firearms will be sent for ballistic tests at a forensic laboratory of the police," Spies said. "Furthermore, none of the suspects are police members, hence the origin of the uniform pieces forms part of the overall police probe."

Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile lauded the officers for their vigilance to remove illicit firearms and ammunition, "which threatens the safety of communities", from the streets.
