Lilita’s light at the end of the tunnel

- Blake Linder

KNYSNA – Knysna Provincial Hospital's palliative care unit (PCU) now offers patients the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a brand-new "end of life" room, which was officially taken into use last week. The PCU, named Lilita (isiXhosa for "light"), was opened only four months ago. With improved room for patients and new facilities, it offered a space for the Knysna/ Sedgefield Hospice - that oversees the day-to-day running of the unit - to make patients feel at ease in a homely environment, which they couldn't do in the old facility. The only thing missing at the time of the opening was an end of life room, but plans were already in place to convert the garage space into an area where patients can spend their final days.

Only four months later, thanks to donations from various organisations and enterprises, Lilita was able to add the final touch to the services it offers.

On Tuesday 24 August the Hospice welcomed everyone involved in the project to Lilita for the opening and unveiling of the room. "This room is incredibly special to us, and of course to the patients," said Knysna/Sedgefield Hospice's clinical manager, Sister Hilary Grey. "With it facing a direction that allows the sun to shine directly into the room, it is the warmest in the building, and is a wonderful space where our patients and their loved ones can say goodbye in private."

They will also be able to do this without having to be around other patients, as it is separated from the living quarters. The room was made possible by sincere donations from the Knysna Rotary Anns, Eurofloors, Masterglass, Knysna Rotary Club and Knysna Provincial Hospital. It will now provide a place where people can go gentle into that good night, and bid farewell to the loved ones they leave behind.
