Covid-19 cases are a mixed bag in Knysna and Bitou

REGIONAL - The number of active Covid-19 cases increased in Knysna this week despite the number of new cases decreasing, while both metrics decreased somewhat in Bitou. Registrati­ons to receive the Covid-19 vaccine continue to rise as the province nears the three million mark. As at Monday 21 February the Western Cape has seen

2 917 433 registrati­ons for the Covid-19 vaccine, 51,98% of the eligible population. In the Garden Route a total of 255 859 people have registered for the vaccine, 51,68% of the eligible population.

In Knysna there has been a total of 36 251 vaccine registrati­ons, which is 63,15% of the eligible population. Bitou has seen a total of 22 258 vaccine registrati­ons, 52,38% of the eligible population.

As at Tuesday 22 February, Knysna had recorded a total of 9 692 cases of Covid-19, of which 9 365 have recovered, 288 have died, and 39 are active cases. The number of new cases in the past week, 16, is a decrease of 11,11% (-2) in new cases from the week before.

The active cases however increased by 11,43% (+4), with the number the secondlowe­st since 30 November 2021.

The recovery rate has dropped to 96,63% (96,67% last week) while the mortality rate is 3%. The deaths increased slightly, climbing by one this week.

In Bitou as at Tuesday, 5 653 Covid-19 cases had been recorded, with 5 472 having recovered, 143 having died, and 38 being active cases. This shows 12 new cases recorded between 15 and 22 February, a decrease of 58,62%% (-17).

The active cases fell by 26,92% (-14) this week, and are the lowest since 7 December 2021. The recovery rate is now 96,80% (96,54% last week), and the mortality rate is 2,5%. The deaths have remained the same for four weeks in a row.
