The very best of our best

REGIONAL - The best athletes from primary schools in Knysna, Plett and Sedgefield took part in the annual KPSSS inter-town regional athletics meet last week. The event is held to determine the best of the best who will take part in the district competition next week.

On 5 March, athletes from all over the Eden and Central Karoo Education District (Ecked) will be converging on Oudtshoorn for the annual competition where the members of the district athletics team are determined.

The athletes will be representing four different regions within Ecked - Hessequa, George, Oudtshoorn, and KPSSS (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Sedgefield School Sports) - and if they make the cut for the district team they will be heading to Cape Town to compete against athletes from the province’s other seven education districts in a bid to make the provincial athletics team.

KPSSS includes every school in the CX region from the Crags to Sedgefield to

Karatara. Each school holds its own athletics meet before holding intra-town meets where athletes try and qualify for their town’s athletics team to take part in the KPSSS meet. From there only the top athletes qualify to travel to Oudtshoorn, with set distances and times in place for every track and field item that athletes compete in. The KPSSS day was held at the Knysna High School sports fields on Friday 18 February, with hundreds of schoolchildren taking part. The weather was perfect for a fun-filled yet competitive day of athletics, with the sun shining down on the athletes from start to finish.
