Three out of four for CX clubs

-

REGIONAL - The cricket clubs in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay won three of their four games in their respective one-day leagues last weekend.

Of the three leagues in SWD club cricket only the Premier League was not in action, due to the final of the T20 Competition

(see Page 16), with at least one local club playing in each of the three leagues that were being played. Pirates United's firsts played in Promotion League A, Kranshoek Cobras in Promotion League B, and Pirates' and Knysna Cavaliers' second teams as well as Plett Pioneers' second and third teams all played in the Reserve League.

Pirates A vs Bongolethu

In Bridgton in Oudtshoorn, Bongolethu won the toss and chose to bowl first on Saturday 5 November. A good decision - they bowled Pirates out for 116 runs as Jade Titus top-scored with 28 runs while Justin

Meyer contributed with 21. Stachis Barnard and Branton Draai were the pick of the Bongolethu bowlers, taking three wickets each.

In the run chase Bongolethu didn't fare much better, battling their way to the target. They managed to just hold on to win by one wicket - Christiano Esterhuizen topscored with 41 and Barnard contributed with 34. Titus was also the pick of the Pirates bowlers, taking three wickets for 32 runs in 10 overs.

Cobras vs Kwanonqaba

Also on Saturday, but in Kranshoek, the home side won the toss and batted first. It proved the perfect decision by captain Wayne Oraai. Two batsmen scored half-centuries -

Shanwell Martins (54) and Johan Faroq (65) - but John Koopman stood out above the rest with a stellar 130 not-out off a mere 70 balls. Cobras scored 423-8 in only 35 overs. Myo Azaxole took three wickets for 74 runs in six overs for Kwanonqaba.

They couldn't emulate the Cobras' innings with the bat though, as Kwanonqaba were bowled out for only 38 - Henco Joseph and Azaxole top-scored with five runs each. Kevin Brouers was Cobras' best bowler with three wickets for nine runs in four overs.

Pioneers B vs Pioneers C

On Sunday in New Horizons in Plett, Pioneers C won the toss and bowled first. Kelvin Davids was the only Pioneers C batsman to reach double figures, but scored a well-played 40 runs as his side was bowled out for 139 runs. Keith Oraai and Anschwill Windvogel took four wickets each for Pioneers B.

Opening batsman and captain Lumko Maart (41) and fellow opener Gwyn Lewis (37) were the top-scorers for Pioneers B as they cruised to a five-wicket victory. Norman Solomons was Pioneers C's best bowler, taking two wickets for only five runs in four overs.

Pirates B vs Cavaliers B

The clash of the Knysna second teams was played at Loerie Park on Sunday. Cavaliers captain Jannie Cremer won the toss, choosing to bat first. After an early wicket, Cavaliers fought back hard with Elro Spies (29 runs) batting alongside Blake Linder who scored 128 runs off only 70 balls to steer Cavaliers to 195 all-out. Jashwin Pietersen was Pirates' bowler of the day with six wickets for 45 runs in eight overs.

Pirates opening batsman Jody de Koker performed well with bat in hand, top-scoring for his side with 45 runs. But the other Pirates batsmen struggled to get going and they were bowled out for 81, giving Cavaliers a 114-run win. Werner Mels was Cavaliers' best bowler, taking four wickets for only two runs in 4,1 overs. – Staff reporter
