KNYSNA - Local women's football club Southern Stars has earned promotion to the second tier of women's football in South Africa, qualifying for one of two promotion spots in the Safa Western Cape Sasol Women's League.

They have previously spent two seasons in the Sasol League before selling their status. It's been a long, arduous journey for the ladies from Knysna, but they are now back in the second division after finishing second in the play-offs held in Knysna on 5 and 6 November.

Southern Stars qualified for a spot in the play-offs for the Sasol League by winning the Safa Eden Regional Women's League in October.

They were one of four teams taking part, the other three being Invincible Cravenby nby (Cape Town), Lucky ucky Girls (Overberg) and Prince Valley (Central entral Karoo).

The sides competed in a round-robin stage first, playing three games apiece, to determine long standings to finalise who will play in the final of the play-offs.

Southern Stars started off in a perfect way, beating Lucky Girls 4-1 in their first game.

However, they came up against

Invincible Cravenby in the next game, who reversed the scoreline by beating Southern Stars 4-1. The ladies from Knysna had one job to do in the third game - win. And win they did, beating Prince Valley 7-0 to ensure a spot in the final and promotion to the Safa Western Cape Sasol Women's League.

They played Invincible Cravenby again in the play-offs final, and it was a much closer game on this occasion. But, the ladies from Cape Town still emerged victorious, beating the Eden ladies 2-1.
