Value of LPR cameras highlighted
The value of licence plate recognition (LPR) cameras was highlighted in Plett at the weekend when local authorities managed to arrest four suspects believed to have been involved in ATM fraud across the Western and Eastern Cape.
Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) operations head Otto Olivier said that several incidents of bank card cloning and ATM fraud were reported in Sedgefield and Knysna on Friday 22 September.
"When the vehicle was picked up on the LPR system going to the Eastern Cape, authorities were informed.
“Attempts to pull the vehicle over in the Eastern Cape were unsuccessful," Olivier said.
The following day the same vehicle, believed to have been linked to another ATM crime in the Eastern Cape, was spotted heading towards Plettenberg Bay just after 14:00. Various crime fighters including police highway patrol, local police, Plett Rapid Response, Smhart Security, provincial traffic and Bitou municipal law enforcement, responded and the vehicle was pulled over in town. They managed to arrest four suspects.
"It is always difficult to explain
or have the right words to describe to others the absolutely amazing feeling of brotherhood among all the role players," Olivier said.
"The total trust, cohesion, and professionalism are profound. We are truly blessed to be part of the different law agencies, inter-town tactical and security teams. It was yet again quite exhilarating witnessing the unity and efficiency during the operation." Police confirmed the arrests.
