New cricket season starts for CX clubs

- Blake Linder

While the SWD Cricket club season officially got underway last weekend with the start of the SWD T20 Competition, things are only going to kick into gear for Knysna and Plett clubs this weekend. Defending champions Knysna Cavaliers as well as Pirates United, Plett Pioneers and Kranshoek Cobras will all be in action.

The 2023/24 SWD cricket season presents its fair share of changes across the board, but in particular for the four clubs from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, with a significant shake-up in the pools that the clubs are competing in. In previous years, Cavaliers, Pirates, Pioneers and Cobras competed against one another in the group stages of the SWD T20 Competition. This is no longer the case.

Cavaliers have been moved into Pool H, where they are drawn alongside Ramblers, Hartenbos and New Dawn Park. Their T20 title defence will commence this Saturday, 30 September, as they take on all three of their competitors in one day. Cavaliers face New Dawn Park first, at 09:00, followed by Hartenbos at 12:25 and lastly Ramblers at 15:40. All of the matches will be played at the Knysna High School sports fields.

Pirates and the two Plett clubs remain together in Pool H and welcome NMU Madibaz George into the pool. On Saturday 30 September, Pioneers and Pirates will face off at 12:25 in the only match of the day.

On Sunday 1 October, Cobras and Pioneers play the Plett derby at 12:25, followed by a match between Pirates and Cobras at 15:40.

All of the matches will be played at the Ashford Sports Ground on the Plett Airport road.

Every game is of the utmost importance to each club, as only top spot in the pool will progress to the quarter-finals. Due to the nature of the draw, the winners of Pool G and Pool H will play against each other on 14 October. Thereafter the winners progress to the semi-final on 21 October and possibly the final on 22 October.
