ART Setting in motion
KNYSNA - Dancers from the Art in Motion Dance Studio recently brought their year to a close with yet another brilliant showcase of the skills and dances they learned throughout the year.
The theme for this year's Art in Motion showcase was A Night on Broadway, and it definitely was showtime when the curtains opened on 14 September for the first of two performances of the show. A total of 39 dancers shone brighter than any Broadway light possibly could, with 23 dance items performed on each night.
The dances ranged from vibrant, energetic hip-hop numbers to emotive dances that could bring tears to almost anybody's eye. The dances took inspiration from a variety of shows that are currently on or have been performed on Broadway in the past, such as The Lion King and Hamilton. They even took inspiration from the silver screen, adapting songs and dances from movies such as The Greatest Showman and The Phantom of the Opera.
The two-night showcase was definitely one to remember, as the studio also celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2023. Founder Maria Coetzer expressed her utmost gratitude to all who have been part of her journey thus far, highlighting one dancer in particular, Nicole van Strijp, who was her first pupil. Nicole is in matric this year and will be moving on and saying goodbye to the studio. Many a tear was shed on the final night as memories were recalled, but in spite of this, smiles were still wide and anticipation high for what lies ahead for the studio in the next year.
