One actor, two shows:

David Muller’s coming to town

- Michelle Pienaar

SEDGEFIELD - Cape Town actor David Muller, also known as the "Merry Scholar", brings two performances to the Garden Route - Whale Nation and Oom Schalk from the Heart.

The acclaimed and unique piece of theatre, Whale Nation, written by Heathcote Williams, will be showcased at Studio 42 in Sedgefield on Tuesday 17 October. Theatre critics have sung Muller's praises for his interpretation of this theatre piece, in which he pays homage to nature's largest sea wonder. The production is directed by Claire Watling. Book a seat through Quicket.

"Williams' epic poem forms the script and it is a delicate tale beautifully verbalised," writes Lieske Bester, for the Masque Theatre in Cape Town.

"The stirring details conjure up visuals that magnify the story line and transport the viewer into and under the water. The world and social structures of whales (and other mammals) are in sharp contrast to the insensitivity, ferocity and greed that characterise ours.

"The poignant text, together with subtle changes in Muller's interpretation, makes us acutely aware of our behaviour towards those we are supposed to care for, look after and preserve for future generations. The effect is shaming – and haunting. I was convinced I heard whale music and gulls throughout the experience and the short silence before the applause confirmed that the audience was equally affected."
